Rules of Writing ‘The Creature’

  • Starting from Week 1, Azazel’s perspective will never be shown

  • ‘Clay’ or ‘The Creature’ will never be depicted or have its physical appearance described

  • Every week will attempt a new perspective/medium

Outcome

While juggling full-time university, full-time work, an internship and freelance, I managed to produce a chapter of ‘The Creature’ weekly.

I produced over 100 visual assets, covering various storylines and character arcs. There’s every medium I could think of covering through the mailing-list format: a podcast, a choose your own adventures, a script, a chatterbox, a paper puppet, a dialogue, an interview and so so so so many more. As a writer interested in hybrid fiction, it was the perfect opportunity to push my limits as a writer. I wanted to understand how we tell stories in every way but traditional fiction.

‘The Creature’ was a tool to understand how we communicate ideas we don’t traditionally see in our bookstores. How we talk about gender, chronic pain, sexuality, burnout, abuse, censorship, motherhood and so many ideas that I had in my head in 2024.

It’s still available to read on Substack, however is to be treated as a proof of concept for another work in the future.
